How to Deal with … Overtalkers

October 21, 2026 By Nagesh Belludi Leave a Comment

How to Deal with Overtalkers We’ve all encountered overtalkers—those who dominate conversations and turn a lively exchange into a monologue. Sometimes, we even catch ourselves doing the same. Handling these chatterboxes can feel exhausting, especially when every attempt to contribute is drowned out by a flood of words.

Before jumping to conclusions, take a moment to understand the situation. Overtalking doesn’t always stem from self-centeredness. It can arise from a need for connection, enthusiasm, or even social anxiety. Some people talk excessively because they’ve felt unheard or neglected. Recognizing these motivations can foster empathy and make conversations with overtalkers more manageable.

Cultural differences also play a role in how we communicate. The length of pauses and conversational flow can vary across regions and backgrounds, so overtalking isn’t always intentional or negative.

When dealing with compulsive talkers, especially those leaning into self-promotion or narcissism, set clear boundaries. Politely guide the conversation back to a balanced exchange, ensuring everyone has a chance to contribute. If necessary, excuse yourself gracefully to avoid feeling trapped.

Show compassion toward socially awkward overtalkers. Gently steer the conversation to allow pauses and space for others to speak. Ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest to encourage a more balanced dialogue.

Navigating these conversations is like finding your way through a verbal maze. Strike a balance between asserting yourself and maintaining harmony. If interruptions are necessary, don’t hesitate to step in sooner than you might feel comfortable.

In recurring situations, consider a direct approach. Choose a private moment to kindly express how their overtalking makes you feel, and suggest ways to create a more balanced conversation.

Idea for Impact: Overtalkers can benefit from gentle feedback. By fostering a space where every voice is heard, you contribute to healthier, more respectful conversations.
