Busyness is a State of Mind Refrain from judging how busy you are based on how much you must do. When there are too many things to do, you feel busy, and when there isn’t much to do, you feel not busy at all.

Busyness is generally in the mind. It’s the feeling of being scattered about what you don’t have. You can only ever do one thing at a time, so when you claim you’re busy, you’re referring to all the distractions, regrets, apprehensions, fears, and uncertainties that keep your mind unsettled. Busyness is the mental clutter, meaning there’s scant space to think. An overwhelmed mindset can contribute to a sense of being overly busy, even in situations where the workload might be manageable.

Idea for Impact: Being busy is indeed a state of mind, not a state of affairs. When you get overwhelmed, ask yourself, “Am I actually busy, or does it just seem this way? The things I’m doing—and supposed to do—don’t inherently mean I have to keep believing I’m too busy.” Find your focus.

Are you one of those people who agonize over every little decision? Do you find yourself in an epic battle of comparison when it comes to picking out what to pack for your holiday, choosing a movie, buying cereal, or selecting a restaurant? Chances are you are a maximizer—an expert in the art of analyzing every option to make that elusive “perfect” choice. It’s in your DNA to want the absolute best.

Perfectionism Often Leads to Frustration and Stagnation

Don’t Yearn for Perfection in Every Choice

You stand apart from the other category of decision-makers—the satisficers. These individuals effortlessly select from a variety of good options, swiftly make decisions, and contentedly live with the outcomes. They don’t invest time pursuing perfection; for them, “good enough” is just that—good enough.

Most people, though, fall somewhere on the spectrum between satisficing and maximizing. Studies conducted by the Swarthmore College psychologist Barry Schwartz, the author of the best-selling book The Paradox of Choice—Why More Is Less (2004,) have shown that extreme maximizers tend to suffer from lower levels of optimism, happiness, self-esteem, and overall life satisfaction. These perfectionists are even less content with their everyday decisions and are plagued by constant regret. So, while these perfectionists are out there desperately hunting for the highest-rated restaurant, movie, or cruise, they might be sucking the joy out of life—for themselves and those around them.

Here’s a nifty trick to help you break free from this endless cycle of decision-making despair. Picture this: set a time limit of 30 to 60 seconds for most decisions in your life. In a flash, you eliminate the anxiety and nail-biting tension that usually accompanies the nonstop quest for the “right” choice. You might have to tap into your intuition or rely on that subconscious decision-making process we all possess. It’s worth it.

Save yourself the precious commodity called time by getting a general sense of what’s out there and settling for something that’s perfectly fine.

And once you’ve made that choice, it’s time to embrace it wholeheartedly. Focus on the benefits, the positives, and all the amazing things your decision brings into your life. Instead of incessantly second-guessing yourself, you’ll have more time to revel in the fruits of your choice. Imagine that—a life where you’re actually enjoying your decisions instead of fretting over whether they were “right” or not.

Here’s the golden rule: learn to be content with choices that meet your core requirements rather than constantly chasing the mirage of the “best.” Make peace with satisficing and banish the notion of “the one that got away” from your thoughts. It won’t be a walk in the park, mind you. Breaking old habits is always a challenge, and initially, you might find yourself yearning for that elusive perfection. But in the grand scheme of things, liberating yourself from the clutches of maximizing will bring you mental freedom and a more fulfilling approach to decision-making.

Balancing Acts: Navigating ‘Good’ Addictions

Too much of a good thing, we must beware The term “positive addiction” has garnered both praise and criticism. Immersing yourself in creative pursuits such as cooking, sports, music, meditation, dancing, reading, praying, career advancement, or self-improvement can be exceptionally fulfilling without the looming specter of harm.

American psychiatrist William Glasser’s Positive Addictions (1976) laid out six criteria for an activity to be classified as a positive addiction: it should avoid intense competition, require roughly an hour of daily commitment, be done easily without undue mental strain, often be a solitary endeavor, be seen as valuable in physical, mental, or spiritual aspects, offer the potential for personal growth, and not burden you with self-criticism. These positive pursuits only become problematic when they start causing harm to you or your loved ones.

Any form of ‘addiction,’ even when it carries the “good” label, can pose a challenging path to navigate. The key lies in maintaining a well-balanced relationship with your passions. Meditation or contemplation can help you practice detachment from life’s hectic pace, distance yourself from your passion projects, and sustain a healthy equilibrium.

It’s valuable to occasionally hit the pause button and delve into the motivations behind your activities. Are you diving headlong into these pursuits as a means to escape personal issues and evade responsibilities? If you notice your engagement is sliding towards excessive dependence, it’s a warning sign—there’s a risk that they may end up causing harm, not only to you but also to those you cherish.

Idea for Impact: In moderation, take your pleasure, for balance is the key to a life well-lived.

Stop Owning Other People's Problems When the people around you are upset, it’s only natural to feel the urge to help. Offering assistance is a noble act, but there are instances when this well-intentioned impulse can become unproductive, sapping your precious time and energy.

Feeling an obligation to assist is one thing, but when this sense of duty transforms into guilt, it becomes a problem. A repeated failure to set the necessary boundaries or assert your own needs can often leads to resentment.

  • Send your love, not your worries. Care for those you love, but don’t become emotionally entangled in their problems. Maintain a healthy emotional distance and protect your mental and emotional well-being.
  • Offer support, not solutions. Trust that those you care about can figure things out on their own. If they can’t, trust that they’ll turn to you for help when needed. Don’t offer help unbidden. Be cautious about enabling others to sidestep their problems by relying on you to solve them. Encourage self-reliance and personal growth.

You don’t need to extinguish every fire that ignites around you. Assisting with other people’s problems can be emotionally draining. Embrace your boundaries.

As you invest time and energy to the concerns of others, remember that there’s no one looking out for you. Your time and energy are valuable, so use them intentionally and protect your own well-being.

Idea for Impact: Failing to set boundaries turns obligation into guilt, fostering resentment. Balance care and self-preservation.

The question of whether more office time boosts productivity lingers. In a cohesive company culture, flexibility in office days is crucial, tailored to the unique needs of employees, culture, and clients. Rather than strict rules, workplaces need to focus on building team chemistry and accommodating diverse work styles, enhancing collaboration and talent optimization for productivity.

The Problem with Modern Consumer Culture: Dissatisfaction Guaranteed The problem with modern consumer culture is that it makes people want things they don’t need. It encourages us to stay on the ‘hedonic treadmill.’ We never tire of pursuing more and more stuff, especially when those around us have more than we do.

A life of excessive consumerism is not the one to choose.

The engine of a consumer society is discontentment. Consumerism and materialism promote dissatisfaction because if people are happy and appreciative of what they’ve got, they’d be less concerned about getting more.

Modern advertising is manipulative. It’s no longer about telling people that a product exists. It’s not about helping consumers respond favorably to an existing need they have. It is now about creating false desires such as for absurdly priced Louis Vuitton products—wants and needs for something they weren’t probably aware of before seeing the advertisement.

Discontentment is the motivation for our restless desire to spend.

Consumerism encourages the relentless accumulation of positional goods.

Goods, often cheaply and readily available to us, are sold not because of their utility but because of the image that they carry (think Marlboro Man.) Advertisers suggest what we’ll be saying to others about ourselves. As soon as we have purchased one thing, the next thing is dangled.

Idea for Impact: Consume Less. Live More.

Folks, be aware of how consumerism touches your life and footprint on the earth’s resources. Ignore advertising. Live the life you want, not the one others would like you to live. More and more is not better if it can never be enough.

'Being Nobody, Going Nowhere' by Ayya Khema (ISBN 086171198X) Within life’s rich tapestry, we often find ourselves caught between two elusive realms—the past and the future. As the celebrated German Buddhist nun Ayya Khema eloquently reminds us in her thought-provoking invitation to embark on a journey of mindfulness, Being Nobody, Going Nowhere: Meditations on the Buddhist Path (1987,) our path is a quest for the present moment.

One of our human absurdities is the fact that we’re constantly thinking about either the future or the past. Those who are young think of the future because they’ve got more of it. Those who are older think more about the past because, for them, there is more of it. But in order to experience life, we have to live each moment. Life has not been happening in the past. That’s memory. Life is not going to happen in the future. That’s planning. The only time we can live is now, this moment, and absurd as it may seem, we’ve got to learn that. As human beings with life spans of sixty, seventy, or eighty years, we have to learn to actually experience living in the present. When we have learned that, we will have eliminated a great many of our problems.

Life is a fleeting current, and it manifests not in the echoes of yesteryears, nor in the dreams of morrows yet to come.

The essence of life, the only fragment of existence we can lay claim to, resides in this very moment—the now.

Let’s embrace this moment fully. Let’s resolve to breathe, to cherish, and to be truly present, for each moment is a precious gem, unique and irreplaceable, for once it slips into the past, it becomes but a memory.

Live each moment.

How to Avoid the Sunday Night Blues

A proper Sunday isn’t complete unless you’ve expertly wasted every precious moment and then find yourself submerged in a sea of sorrow as that sinking feeling settles in your stomach, signaling the end of the glorious weekend.

The “Sunday-Night Blues” revolve around bidding farewell to the weekend and bracing yourself for yet another dreadful week ahead. It’s a baffling feeling when you can’t account for where the time went or what happened to all those noble intentions you had.

The tranquility of the weekend gives way to a somber mood, a sense of impending doom, and a restless night of sleep. It’s even hard to accept that the brief respite from the previous week’s work is ending.

Here’re some tips to help you ward off those Sunday-Night Blues. Spread out your chores and errands throughout the week, or better yet, tackle the tedious tasks early on—the earlier you deal with pain, the less painful it is. Tie up any loose or annoying ends on Friday, so you don’t have to give it a second thought over the weekend.

Take a few moments earlier during the weekend to plan and organize your upcoming week. This simple act will grant you greater control and preparedness, easing any anxiety or stress over the upcoming week.
