Idea for Impact: Don’t try so hard to control and stop your thoughts. Let yourself feel them. But don’t permit them to control you and your body.

When you no longer define yourself by your thoughts, you’re no longer a prisoner of your own mind.

Are you one of those people who agonize over every little decision? Do you find yourself in an epic battle of comparison when it comes to picking out what to pack for your holiday, choosing a movie, buying cereal, or selecting a restaurant? Chances are you are a maximizer—an expert in the art of analyzing every option to make that elusive “perfect” choice. It’s in your DNA to want the absolute best.

Perfectionism Often Leads to Frustration and Stagnation

Don’t Yearn for Perfection in Every Choice

You stand apart from the other category of decision-makers—the satisficers. These individuals effortlessly select from a variety of good options, swiftly make decisions, and contentedly live with the outcomes. They don’t invest time pursuing perfection; for them, “good enough” is just that—good enough.

Most people, though, fall somewhere on the spectrum between satisficing and maximizing. Studies conducted by the Swarthmore College psychologist Barry Schwartz, the author of the best-selling book The Paradox of Choice—Why More Is Less (2004,) have shown that extreme maximizers tend to suffer from lower levels of optimism, happiness, self-esteem, and overall life satisfaction. These perfectionists are even less content with their everyday decisions and are plagued by constant regret. So, while these perfectionists are out there desperately hunting for the highest-rated restaurant, movie, or cruise, they might be sucking the joy out of life—for themselves and those around them.

Here’s a nifty trick to help you break free from this endless cycle of decision-making despair. Picture this: set a time limit of 30 to 60 seconds for most decisions in your life. In a flash, you eliminate the anxiety and nail-biting tension that usually accompanies the nonstop quest for the “right” choice. You might have to tap into your intuition or rely on that subconscious decision-making process we all possess. It’s worth it.

Decisions, Decisions: Are You a Maximizing Maniac or a Satisficing Superstar Let’s be real here, beyond a certain point, comparing every single option on the planet won’t make a lick of difference. Save yourself the precious commodity called time by getting a general sense of what’s out there and settling for something that’s perfectly fine.

And once you’ve made that choice, it’s time to embrace it wholeheartedly. Focus on the benefits, the positives, and all the amazing things your decision brings into your life. Instead of incessantly second-guessing yourself, you’ll have more time to revel in the fruits of your choice. Imagine that—a life where you’re actually enjoying your decisions instead of fretting over whether they were “right” or not.

Here’s the golden rule: learn to be content with choices that meet your core requirements rather than constantly chasing the mirage of the “best.” Make peace with satisficing and banish the notion of “the one that got away” from your thoughts. It won’t be a walk in the park, mind you. Breaking old habits is always a challenge, and initially, you might find yourself yearning for that elusive perfection. But in the grand scheme of things, liberating yourself from the clutches of maximizing will bring you mental freedom and a more fulfilling approach to decision-making.

'The Happiness Track' by Emma Seppala (ISBN 0062344013) According to Emma Seppälä, a researcher from Stanford and Yale, the tendency to excessively dwell on negative outcomes and the subsequent self-criticism can erode our self-worth, leading to self-doubt and unhappiness.

In her book The Happiness Track (2016,) Seppälä advocates for self-compassion, emphasizing the importance of treating oneself with the same understanding, mindfulness, and kindness that one would extend to a friend. This shift in mindset can lead to significantly increased resilience, productivity, and overall well-being.

Self-Criticism Is Self-Sabotage Seppälä recommends a practice of expressive writing. When dealing with intense emotions, try writing a letter to yourself as if you were addressing a friend. While this might initially feel unusual, this self-compassionate approach can help put your feelings into perspective rather than magnifying them. Expressive writing offers an opportunity for meaningful change by confronting your realities, reframing your experiences, and identifying any obstacles hindering your pursuit of purpose, joy, and contentment.

Why You Should Make a Daily Appointment with Your Worries

Set aside specific 15- to 30-minute appointments on your calendar for focused “Worry Time.”

Make them regular if possible, as in “I’ll worry from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. every evening.”

If a worry emerges before or after your Worry Time, jot it down and tackle it later.

For the span of your set Worry Time, agonize over whatever is bothering you. Chew on your problems or write them down. Then commit yourself to get back to your routine.

Don’t do this right before bed or first thing in the morning, especially if you tend to wake up with a sense of anxiety over everything that needs to be done.

Ruminating about the past and worrying about the future makes staying in the present moment impossible. It’s mentally and emotionally draining. It interferes with moving forward. Therefore, by using this focused time for worrying, you can get your worries out of the way. Put off any emergent worries until your next scheduled worry session, just as you should ‘do’ emails at set points during the day instead of letting them disrupt your flow.

Limiting your time to worry can also make your Worry Time productive. By having a clear limit to how much time you can spend thinking about an issue, you can push yourself to seek a solution instead of ruminating endlessly.

With some practice, you’ll learn not to let those inevitable anxieties flood your thoughts throughout your day.

Your beliefs, rather than your perceived lack of ability, could be the most significant hindrance between your life and the life you want to live. Sadly, self-talk is endless; the more you engage the negative narratives running through your head, the more you’ll abide by them.

Whenever you’re plagued by self-limiting beliefs, gather evidence against them, reframe them, and oppugn them. Scour your brain for real-life examples that debunk the limiting beliefs. For instance, if addressing the self-limiting belief “I am not qualified,” think of as many happenings as possible that you earlier thought you weren’t qualified for—but went on to achieve anyway. These could include being offered a dream job, passing an exam you feared was above your level or showing up when you didn’t think you could.

Idea for Impact: Over time, make a concerted effort to challenge deep-rooted core beliefs by testing them to see if they’re valid. You’ll develop the mental resilience needed to crush the self-limiting beliefs that deter you from reaching your potential.

To avoid getting trapped in negative thoughts such as “No one will hire me,” “I’m so angry,” or “I’m an imposter,” thought stopping can be a lifesaver. This technique is particularly effective in preventing your mind from fixating on distressing situations. The more frustrated and irate you get, the more likely you are to avoid thinking about it. But then you end up blaming yourself for remaining stuck.

When you catch yourself indulging in unproductive thoughts, immediately shout “STOP!” and shift your focus to a productive task. You can take a small step toward your goal by reading an article, watching a video, or reaching out to a trusted friend for suggestions on how to enhance your situation.

It’s also vital to assess if the negative thought is justified or if there’s anything you can do to improve the situation.

While it’s true that thought-stopping alone may not be adequate to address all causes of being stuck, it can still be a potent tool to help you identify negative thoughts that play repeatedly in your mind. Once you become aware of these thoughts, you can break free from the cycle of negativity and move forward positively by taking small steps to get unstuck.

When you like yourself better, you’ll begin to get more productive and improve your life in small ways, which can lead to bigger achievements.

When the show you’ve been watching won’t fascinate you as much as it did the previous day. When you’ll not feel like being with a loved one.

Feeling helpless is something that all people suffer from time to time. You may become dispassionate or disengaged from the things and people that ground you. The hobbies you care for don’t cheer you up.

Sometimes, it’s just a day that only you can get through, even if you feel nobody understands what you’re going through. Nobody’s going to do your life for you. Hang in there—you’ll soon find ways to deal with it and emerge from what can feel like a hole or a dark tunnel with no end.
