How to Deal with … Interrupters

How to Deal with Interrupters Interruptions can derail a conversation, making it feel disjointed and disrespectful. It’s more than just irritating—it disrupts the flow and leaves the speaker feeling unheard.

Persistent interruptions, especially in relationships, can stifle idea-sharing and negatively impact the connection between people.

When someone cuts you off, take a moment before reacting. Consider the context, the importance of your point, and how your response might affect the discussion. Decide if it’s worth asserting yourself to ensure your voice is heard, but recognize that sometimes letting minor interruptions slide can keep things moving smoothly.

If you choose to stand up for yourself, do it tactfully. A simple, “Hold on, I’d like to finish my thought,” or “Just a second, and I’ll let you talk,” respects both your voice and the other person’s input while maintaining control of the conversation.

To preempt interruptions, set clear expectations upfront. Say, “I’ve got something important to share. It’ll take about two minutes, and I’d appreciate your full attention.” This signals that they’ll have their turn once you’ve finished.

For persistent interrupters, enlist the help of the meeting leader or facilitator. Let them know the issue and ask for their support. They can step in and say, “Thanks for your input; let’s hear the rest of Jane’s thoughts before we move on.” This collaborative approach ensures that everyone’s contributions are valued, creating a more respectful and positive communication environment.
