The Dividend of Waiting: Patience May Be the Best Bargain in Tech

Slow Adoption Turns Novel Technology Into Mature Bargains That Outlast the Rush for Urgency The technology industry thrives on urgency, but urgency is a poor advisor. In my experience, the push for the “latest” rarely aligns with what people actually need. Early adopters pay a cognitive tax that reviews hardly ever mention: weekends lost to setup wizards, drawers colonized by the dongle graveyard—adapters for ports that no longer exist on any device in the house. The temptation is understandable. The cost, less so.

This isn’t about thrift. I can afford to upgrade and often choose not to. My main computer lasted eleven years, replaced only when it finally couldn’t keep up—that moment of genuine necessity, the Threshold of Utility, being the only honest reason to move on. Those who upgraded early paid full price for unready hardware, then watched the same features arrive cheaper and working a year later. They did the work. I got the discount. My old Kindle tells a similar story: it displays text without complaint, and if I lose it down the back of a couch, I’m out fifty dollars, not two hundred.

The pattern reflects something broader. We’ve reached a plateau in what these devices actually deliver, and the industry, struggling to sell transformation, has settled for marketing increments—breathlessly, in a hushed keynote voice, as though slightly faster autofocus were a gift to civilization. Smartphone cameras are technically extraordinary, yet most photos look identical to five years ago. The difference between a forgettable shot and a good one has always been composition and light, neither of which come in the packaging. Billboard-quality resolution, destined to live and die on a small screen.

Idea for Impact: The iPhone you’re considering will hand its headline features to a cheaper model next year. That’s not a consolation prize—that’s the better deal, arriving debugged and discounted. Don’t pay the premium for novelty. Claim the dividend of maturity.
