Many businesses are built not from insight but from refusal. The refusal to accept that something broken is simply how things are.
Kemmons Wilson (1913–2003) dropped out of high school to support his family and never stopped building. A popcorn machine in a Memphis theater. Cigarette machines across the city. A homebuilding business and movie theaters. By his thirties he was an unsentimental operator who had spent decades solving practical problems with limited resources.
In 1951, he took his wife and five children on vacation.
It was, by his own account, the most miserable trip of his life. The motels were cramped and overpriced, and they charged $2 per child—worth $25 today—even though the children were sleeping in their parents’ room, consuming nothing extra.
Wilson came home and built Holiday Inn. No extra charge for children. Clean, consistent rooms. A standard people could count on. Within a few decades it had grown to 1,750 properties across the world.
He didn’t look for a market opportunity. He looked for a solution to his own dissatisfaction, and that is often a more reliable compass than any analysis.
The insight wasn’t original or hidden. Every parent on that highway already felt it. Wilson was simply the one who thought I could do this better and actually meant it.
Most people encounter bad service and move on. The entrepreneurial mind gets stuck on it. If something genuinely bothers you, it is almost certainly bothering thousands of other people who aren’t going to do anything about it.
That gap is where businesses are built.
Idea for Impact: Genius doesn’t lie only in originality. More often it lies in the refusal to accept that mediocre is the best something can be.
