Ditch Tradition: Decluttering for a Brighter Future One phrase I’ve grown to detest in my professional life is, “We do it this way because we’ve always done it this way.” Some things just don’t make sense anymore. Many organizations find themselves burdened with outdated rules, processes, and traditions that are no longer relevant. It’s high time to shed these relics of the past and embrace a more agile and responsive approach.

  • Gain a Fresh Perspective. Sometimes, we’re too close to the forest to see the trees, and the truth remains hidden. To break free from the status quo, imagine yourself as an outsider and challenge the “we’ve always done it this way” mindset.
  • Involve Everyone. Liberating your organization from wasteful bureaucracy is a group effort. Each of us must simplify, cut through complexity, and shed unnecessary formalities. It’s how you sculpt a responsive and agile organization, one step at a time.
  • Ditch the Unnecessary. Examine your procedures, customs, and requirements. Are you holding on to outdated practices simply because they’ve always been there? It’s time to unravel these mysteries of tradition and revamp or remove habits that no longer serve us.
  • Supercharge Decision-Making. When decisions take forever or procedures become too convoluted to comprehend, it’s a sign of trouble. It’s time to band together, reinvigorate your approach, and simplify for a brighter future.

Idea for Impact: Shed Your Old Skin and Adapt

Don’t let tradition and outdated regulations hold back your future success. Break free from the chains of bureaucracy and embrace agility and flexibility.

A culture that discourages change stifles innovation and opportunity. To cultivate a culture that welcomes and supports change, lead by example and eliminate negative attitudes. It’s time to set sail towards a more adaptable and prosperous future.

Curate Wisely: Navigating Book Overload Most books are trash—seriously. Most could be condensed into booklets, booklets into essays, essays into articles, articles into paragraphs, and paragraphs into tweets.

To handle the avalanche of books published each year, get picky—grab the ones that really speak to you, match your vibe, and have solid recommendations. Don’t trust those internet best-seller lists; they can be manipulated through “leapfrogging.”

When you crack open a new book, start with the intro. It sets the stage, tells you what to expect, and usually gives examples. Check out the table of contents and scan through a few sample chapters to see if it’s your jam before committing to a full read.

Also, consider old favorites—they stick with you better after a few rounds. Trust me; it takes a few passes to really get those ideas to sink in.

Why We're So Bad At Defining Problems You can’t solve a problem unless you fully understand it. The quality of your solution is usually tied to how well you define the problem, as the often-misattributed quote goes, “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and five minutes thinking about solutions.

Unfortunately, many organizations still haven’t embraced this crucial lesson. Problem definition is challenging because many organizations focus on quick fixes rather than thoroughly understanding the issues at hand.

A solution-focused culture obscures true problem identification.

In such a culture, managers feel pressured to find immediate fixes and achieve short-term goals. They also tend to fall in love with solutions too quickly, even if these solutions don’t address the real issues. Deep, evidence-based inquiry into dormant problems and potential points of failure that may have long-term impacts are often neglected. Discussing problems, especially when the organization itself might be part of the problem, is seen as taboo or a sign of weakness.

Idea for Impact: Resist Solutionist Behaviors

Develop a greater appreciation for identifying problems.

Problem identification should be an ongoing activity, helping your boss, team, and customers identify and solve the right problems while resisting inherent solutionist behaviors.

By encouraging a culture that truly falls in love with problems, not just solutions, you not only improve your chances of solving them but also pave the way for a better, less complicated organization.

Why Group Brainstorming Falls Short on Creativity and How to Improve It Seventy years ago, American advertising executive Alex Osborn impacted the field of management with his book Applied Imagination (1953.) This groundbreaking work introduced the concept of brainstorming, marking the beginning of a more collaborative and inclusive approach to leadership. At that time, the prevailing style of leadership was characterized by command-and-control, emphasizing silos and solitary decision-making. Executives relied on traditional chalkboard to-do lists to guide their actions.

Psychologists investigating the “illusion of group productivity” quickly discovered a significant flaw in brainstorming. Despite its intention to boost creativity and generate numerous ideas through collaboration, group brainstorming proved less effective than individual brainstorming, followed by the pooling of ideas.

Here’s an enhanced version of the group brainstorming practice that can foster better and more daring ideas. Begin by providing individuals or pairs with personal space for separate contemplation, allowing their thoughts to wander freely. Then, encourage them to share their ideas, including the unconventional and impractical ones, to ignite the group brainstorming session. This approach eliminates the awkwardness of everyone staring at each other in silence. Instead, it creates an environment conducive to fruitful discussions. It prevents anyone from monopolizing the conversation, attempting to prove others wrong, impressing superiors, or simply rambling for personal amusement. Furthermore, this approach effectively guards against premature judgment, which stifles creativity.

They see firsthand what’s working smoothly and what’s not, acting like customer whisperers, understanding exactly what people want and where things are going wrong.

But often, they keep quiet about what they observe. Can you blame them? Their to-do lists are endless—they’re racing against deadlines, handling customer frustrations, navigating strict policies and guidelines, and juggling a mountain of requirements. They barely have a spare minute to address the root issues.

Speaking up feels like walking on eggshells. They fear causing a fuss or feeling like their voice won’t count.

Listen to Your Frontline Heroes; They Know What’s Up

As a leader, you can change the game by opening up lines of communication with your frontline team. Spend some time in the trenches. Dedicate an hour each week or an afternoon each month, depending on the chaos, and gather everyone for brainstorming sessions. What are the major issues you need to tackle in your operations? How can you collectively solve them, and how can you ensure those changes stick?

Foster an environment that celebrates quirky, out-of-the-box ideas. Provide people with the time and resources they need to tweak their work and bring their ideas to life. And involve everyone in the process. Remember, real change takes time—sometimes months. But it’s worth the wait. Most companies lack patience, but those that do usually thrive at the grassroots level.

Idea for Impact: Frontline Feedback Drives Real Change

Companies must rethink how they perceive frontline employees. Sure, processes and technology can handle a lot, and automating processes can save heaps of money. But frontline workers are the lifeblood of the company—they’re the ones who truly connect with customers. They represent your brand. Don’t underestimate their insights. Treat them as the problem-solvers and brand ambassadors they are, and give them a voice in the mix.

Data Overload: Drowning Wisdom in a Sea of Garbage The prevailing belief suggests that the more access we have to information, the greater our knowledge and, subsequently, our wisdom.

However, reality paints a different picture. Instead of fostering deeper comprehension and insight, the influx of information often leads to a need for more judgment, understanding, and wisdom. The sheer volume of data, lacking proper context and interpretation, clouds rather than clarifies our understanding of the world.

This inundation of information has also cultivated a culture where one of the gravest social faux pas is to appear uninformed and lacking opinions, spanning topics from politics to what’s trending in pop culture. Consequently, we hastily form opinions based on fragmentary information and surface-level impressions, rather than genuine understanding. Moreover, there’s a noticeable emphasis on quick, witty exchanges, often at the expense of more profound and reflective communication.

This societal pressure to always have an answer shuts down our curiosity and makes it hard to admit when we’re clueless about something. Meaningful discourse and genuine understanding are often sacrificed at the altar of social expectations.

Idea for Impact: Wisdom resides not in the torrent of noise. Value depth over breadth.

Human nature is such that we don’t like to contemplate letting go of the skills and behaviors that “got us here.” The arrogance of success is to assume that what you did yesterday will be sufficient for tomorrow. Contentment often leads to stagnation.

Have a learning mindset. After every win, be critical—even faultfinding—and try to understand what made you successful in each case with brutal self-honesty. Was it luck? Was it skill?

Idea for Impact: Let success be a brilliant teacher in the areas where weaknesses must be addressed.

The Deceptive Power of False Authority: A Case Study of Linus Pauling's Vitamin C Promotion In the 1970s and 1980s, Linus Pauling, the American chemist with not one but two Nobel Prizes to his name, started championing the extraordinary potential of mega-doses of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) as a wide-ranging panacea—a solution to a myriad of ailments, in fact—from the common cold to cancer and even heart disease.

The world of medicine and science didn’t greet Pauling’s bold claims with open arms. Skepticism abounded, and rightly so. The reason? A scarcity of compelling scientific evidence to bolster his audacious assertions. Leading medical institutions turned a critical eye toward his ideas, raising ethical red flags. They feared that people might be swayed to forgo established medical treatments based solely on the strength of a seemingly authoritative endorsement of Pauling.

This controversy is a classic case in point of a brilliant person daring to traverse the boundaries of his expertise, venturing into unqualified territories. While a handful of studies explored the potential benefits, a universally accepted scientific consensus on the effectiveness of high-dose Vitamin C for these purposes remained frustratingly elusive. And even today, Pauling’s views on Vitamin C’s health benefits continue to spark fierce debates.

Truth Demands a Deeper Call

Make no mistake; Linus Pauling was a luminary in the realm of chemistry, but his credentials didn’t extend to the domain of medicine. This tale serves as a reminder that intelligence and judgment are not always cut from the same cloth. While Pauling’s claims may hold water in the world of chemistry, blindly accepting his assertions on Vitamin C would lead us down a path of fallacy – the “false appeal to authority,” or “Argument from Authority,” also known as “Argumentum ad Verecundiam.”

Celebrity endorsements, expert testimonies, and references to popular figures in non-expert fields can be a deceptive trap for those who unquestionably trust the statements of authorities. The assumption that truth is inherent in the words of a prominent figure, regardless of solid evidence or sound reasoning, undermines critical evaluation and neglects the necessity for substantial support.

Idea for Impact: Brilliance in one arena doesn’t guarantee infallibility across the board. Approach “expert” opinions with a critical eye, assessing them within the context of the evidence and rationale that underpin the argument. In the quest for understanding, always judge each assertion on its own merits. Context matters.
