Shelton Haynes: Empowering Roosevelt Island's Youth for a Bright Future

Shelton J. Haynes, the President and CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), is not only dedicated to enhancing the island’s infrastructure but also committed to empowering its youth. Under his leadership, RIOC has undertaken transformative projects to create a safe and enriching environment for the island’s young residents.

The Roosevelt Island Youth Center (RIYC) has been a cornerstone of Haynes’ efforts to foster youth development, engagement, and academic stewardship. Through a $2.1 million renovation, the RIYC has evolved into a megaplex of opportunities, offering a variety of enrichment, recreational, and educational programs. This safe space allows young islanders to explore their interests, promote personal growth, and develop essential life skills.

With a focus on inclusivity and diversity, the RIYC has become a place where young people can connect and build meaningful relationships. Social discovery and team building are emphasized, creating a tight-knit community on Roosevelt Island. The center has also become a hub for creative expression, encouraging young talents to flourish.

Shelton Haynes Inspires The Youth

Beyond the RIYC, Haynes has recognized the importance of public art in inspiring the island’s youth. During the unveiling of the FDR Hope Memorial, he spoke about the significance of progressive art on Roosevelt Island, instilling in the young generation a sense of pride in their community. The presence of powerful sculptures like The Girl Puzzle, honoring Nellie Bly, reinforces the idea that Roosevelt Island celebrates the contributions of women and champions equality.

Education has been a top priority for Haynes, who believes knowledge is a crucial driver of progress. He has supported educational opportunities for young islanders through various initiatives. RIOC’s collaboration with Community Resource Exchange provided free nonprofit management workshops to grantees and other Roosevelt Island nonprofits, encouraging professional development in the education sector.

RIOC Nonprofits Serving The Community

Moreover, the Roosevelt Island Public Purpose Fund, established in partnership with The New York Community Trust, has granted $150,000 to 13 nonprofits serving Roosevelt Island residents. These grants support projects to make life on the island more enjoyable, equitable, and educationally enriching. The grants cater to a wide range of interests, from educational programs for older adults to orchestral concerts, contributing to a well-rounded community.

As a Hampton University alumnus, Haynes is no stranger to the power of education and its positive impact on a community. His background in sociology has shaped his approach to community development, focusing on the well-being of individuals and fostering a sense of belonging.

Bright Future Ahead

Looking ahead, Haynes envisions a bright future for Roosevelt Island’s youth. The island’s strategic plans include the Roosevelt Island Sportspark Renovation, an approximate $12 million project to create a health, wellness, and fitness center. With the addition of a fitness center, a multi-purpose meeting and event space, and upgrades to the gymnasium and pool amenities, the Sportspark will become a hub for active lifestyles and youth engagement.

Haynes also emphasizes community policing, ensuring that the island remains one of the safest neighborhoods in New York City. He envisions the Public Safety Department as a model of this mantra, focusing on community-oriented policing and building trust with residents.

As Shelton Haynes continues to champion the aspirations of Roosevelt Island’s youth, the island’s future shines brightly with promise. With a supportive and inclusive environment, young islanders are empowered to pursue their dreams and become active participants in shaping the community they call home. As they grow and flourish, the legacy of Roosevelt Island’s youth will be forever intertwined with Shelton Haynes’ vision of progress and prosperity.
